New York City Economic Development Corporation
In 2006, Alex Garvin & Associates produced Visions for New York City: Housing and the Public Realm , a report for the New York City Economic Development Corporation that highlighted financially sustainable opportunities to build over 200,000 housing units without residential displacement and to dramatically improve the city's public realm through strategic capital investment. The housing opportunities include construction of platforms over infrastructure, development of underused waterfronts, and investment in transit to stimulate development in areas underserved by public transportation.
The public realm opportunities include greening boulevards, adding protected bike lanes, Sunday street closings, and pedestrian reclamations throughout all five boroughs. Each opportunity is designed to stimulate a private market response and make the city a better place to live. Collectively, these opportunities will allow New York City to absorb its projected population growth of 1 million over the next 25 years and to prosper in an increasingly competitive global economy.
