Visions for Housing and Public Realm Investments in New York
New York City Economic Development Corp., New York, NY
In 2006, AGA produced a report for the New York City Economic Development Corporation that highlights financial sustainability opportunities to build over 200,000 housing units without residential displacement and to dramatically improve city’s public realm through strategic capital investment. The housing opportunities include construction of platforms over infrastructure, development of underused waterfronts, and investment in transit to stimulate development in isolated areas. The public realm opportunities include greening boulevards, protected bike lanes, recreational Sunday closings, and pedestrian reclamations throughout all five boroughs. Each opportunity will stimulate private development and make the city a better place to live. Collectively, these opportunities will allow New York City to absorb its projected population growth of 1 million in the next 25 years year and to prosper in the global economy.
